3 TALES ABOUT TRUTH (A COLLECTION OF 3 NOVELLAS)
‘3 TALES ABOUT TRUTH’ is a collection of
three short novels: ‘A Girl’s Mind’, ‘What the Nanny Goat Told Her Kids’ and
‘The Many Faces of Truth’. ‘A Girl’s Mind’ is a tale which centres around two
college students, Eddy (a budding writer) and Etido, who use their relationship
to explore the theme of love and lust; ‘What the Nanny Goat Told Her Kids’ is a
strange mixture of human and animal stories: Grace, the nanny goat, feels
slighted by Mrs Ransom’s remark and so urges her two kids to get ready for a
revolution. When the uprising fails, Grace tells her kids to not only learn to
bark but bite like Muscle and Bone, the Ransom’s dogs, which recently stop some
bandits from robbing the Ransom’s home. Meanwhile, Mr Ransom and a host of
villagers who start sleeping like millionaires because of the promised goodies
from ‘Western countries’ discover late the ‘concerned fellows’ who bring the
good news, making them drink bitter concoctions to enable them to stay in good
health to grab their wealth, are a smart clique of con artists. Lastly, ‘The
Many Faces of Truth’ is a tale of a family reunion and there is an argument
over the truth of less food, less love; the protagonist is peeved with scenes
on television where youths in his nation earnestly ask a military dictator to
transform and become their executive president and so he wonders out loud if
they do not know the 'truth'. But the response from his uncle shows that every
assumed 'truth' has many faces attached to it.
